A Little Extra Effort: Online Master's Degrees
For a growing number of students in the United States, college does not end with a Bachelor's degree. In a sense, college is the new high school; in order to get any kind of entry-level job, more and more young adults must have a college degree to back up their claims. However, in order to rise above the other thousands of college graduates emerging each year, many students go back to school for advanced degrees, including Master's degrees, Doctorates and even advanced certificates. Even for working professionals who have already found their niche, more and more companies require their employees to continue learning on the side. For all of these individuals, online Master's degrees can be the perfect solution.
Education The Right Way
Master's degrees, whether online Master's degrees or traditional experiences, usually require at least one to three additional years of postgraduate study. Master's of Arts and Master's of Science degrees are the two basic types of degrees offered in the United States, and both are available as online Master's degrees. Individuals with Master's degrees often earn an average of two hundred dollars more every week than those employees with terminal Bachelor's degrees. However, there are more reasons to enroll in online Master's degrees than just salary.
A Master's degree can mean entry into a new, advanced profession, promotion or personal enrichment. Only three percent of Americans ever achieve a Master's degree, so online Master's degrees are definitely a way for professionals to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Graduate work is more demanding, more interesting and more goal-oriented than undergraduate work, and even online Master's degrees prove too much for some students who lack the self-discipline, determination and dedication necessary for graduate study.
Master's level work includes advanced courses, written theses, internships and practical work experiences. While the completion of some online Master's degrees means immediate entry into the desired field, some only provide the knowledge necessary for students to move on to practical or written testing, including bar examinations, medical boards and state testing. Other students use their online Master's degrees as a stepping stone toward a doctorate degree, especially those students interested in the humanities who would like to one day return to the university setting to teach. Terminal online Master's degrees, on the other hand, mean no further education is expected or available in a specific field. A Master's of Fine Arts degree is a terminal degree for most painters, writers or photographers, as the hands-on training available in these programs are usually all that is needed to succeed in the arts, along with a good deal of instinct and natural talent.
